Thomas S. Chlebeck has counseled clients for over 11 years on portfolio management, patent drafting, and prosecution in various electrical, software, and mechanical fields. Thomas develops plans for allowance by anticipating examiner concerns, regularly interviewing examiners, and identifying negotiation strategies that balance aggressive advocacy with excellent rapport with examiners.
Thomas has counseled clients regarding many technologies, including displays (OLED and LCD), power (battery control and demand response), audio (virtual and discrete surround sound), imaging, artificial intelligence and machine learning, wireless communications, distributed software systems, simulation/game software, drone control systems, and firearm mechanisms. Over the years, Thomas has worked on litigation as well as due diligence, patentability, and clearance studies, beyond managing international portfolios and patent drafting and prosecution.
Thomas has years of industry experience in software and systems engineering for Boeing Phantom Works, including design and development of a content management system, defense network simulation, and document generation system. Thomas’s other engineering experience includes database (SQLite, MySQL, MSSQL), web, and simulation/game development, as well as work with satellite and autopilot software.
Prior to joining Smith Baluch, Thomas was counsel at Wolf Greenfield and led the AI Committee at a Tysons-based IP boutique.
Thomas’s hobbies include public speaking and software development, including of data-driven web tools interfacing with patent office application programming interfaces. Thomas is comfortable with most programming languages, but most recently enjoys developing in C++ and Python.
Prior to college, Thomas bicycled solo 9,000 miles around the U.S.
